2D Animation

In a studio, 2D animators are part of the art team, and their job is to make the game’s flat drawings move.
They:

  • Take the 2D concept art or character designs and create animations for every action: walking, jumping, attacking, or celebrating.

  • Use software to draw frames or rig characters (so movements are easier to create).

  • Work closely with game designers to make sure animations match the gameplay—like timing a jump so the player can land on platforms perfectly.

  • Coordinate with programmers to make sure the animations run smoothly in the game engine.

  • Sometimes help polish effects like explosions, magic spells, or UI animations.

In a studio, 2D animators bring flat characters and effects to life while making sure they work perfectly in the game.

3D Animation

In 3D games, animators work with models instead of flat drawings.

They:

  • Take the 3D models made by 3D artists and rig them (give them “bones” so they can move naturally).

  • Animate all the actions: running, climbing, fighting, facial expressions, and even tiny details like hair or clothing movement.

  • Collaborate with designers to ensure the movements feel right for the game—like making a character swing a sword in a way that matches the gameplay.

  • Work with programmers to import animations into the game engine and make them interact with player controls and game physics.

  • Sometimes create cinematic scenes (cutscenes) where characters act out story moments.

In a studio, 3D animators turn digital characters into living, moving actors inside the game world.
